Atchison Victorious at Inaugural NAPA AUTOPRO Ultimate Showdowns Event

(7-14-2015) CAUGA, ON – The NAPA Auto Pro Ultimate Showdown Drag Racing Series (USDS) launched its first ever event at Toronto Motorsports Park, with a strong turnout of racers, and a packed house to take in the racing action, at the Canadian Nitro Nationals.

The AUTOPRO USDS crowned its first Champions in Pro Modified, Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster on Sunday, following two days of intense qualifying, and tight elimination action.

Rob Atchison Corvette Pro ModThere were 14 Pro Modified teams in attendance, all vying for a position in the 8 car qualified field. When qualifying was completed, it was many time Pro Mod winner Bruce Boland leading the field with a stout 5.888 @ 245.76 mph. Five of the eight cars that qualified, ran in the fives.

During eliminations, it was former Alcohol Funny Car World Champion, Rob Atchison from London, who worked his way into the final round with consistent performances from his Atchison Machine Service supercharged 1963 Corvette built by Tim McAmis Race Cars. Atchison had defeated Al Martorino’s Mustang in round one, then took out a strong running Derek Hawker and his 1968 Firebird in the semi-finals.

Atchison’s final round opponent was Gen Musto, who was wheeling his nitrous equipped 864 cubic inch 1968 Camaro.

Musto, out of Goodwood, Ontario, found himself inserted into the Pro Mod field as an alternate, and facing low qualifier Bruce Boland in round one. In that match up, Boland’s 1941 Willys acted strangely during the run and was not able to hold off the Camaro of Musto, who captured the upset win. In the semi’s, Musto laid down a 6.648 elapsed time, to take out a red-lighting Jeff Roth.

That set up the first ever NAPA ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN SERIES Pro Modified final, between Rob Atchison and Gen Musto. Back at the burn box, Bob Atchison stood right next to son Rob’s Corvette, ready squirt the injector and fire up for the final. In the other lane, Gen Musto’s team began to scramble for assistance, as the Mountain motored Camaro would not fire up. After different attempts to get the car fired, all that failed, Musto conceded, and told the TMP starter, to let Atchison run alone for the single, and the victory. Atchison fired his Corvette up, completed his burn-out, staged the car and drove it out the back door to a 5.96 at 240.12 mph to become the first ever NAPA AUTOPRO USDS Champion.

Curfew Ends Capitol Raceway NEOPMA Final; Hard vs. McCurdy To Be Run At Later Date

(6-4-2015) CROFTON, MD – The third leg of the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association (NEOPMA) took to the surface of Capitol Raceway this weekend. The track has been gaining notoriety over the past few years and rightly so as the Bradshaw’s have taken this track to a new level of performance capabilities. The track prep easily handles big horsepower and sub six second passes and MPH’s over 240+, its grounds are clean and well-manicured. The staff is well versed in their work and fans love this venue for great nighttime racing. Hosting the NEOPMA Series Jim Bradshaw had this track on kill and racers found it wanted tons of power, not the opposite.

NEOPMA titled this race as the “Paul Woods Sr. Memorial” in respect of our late racer/team owner Paul Woods Sr. whose team showed up Saturday to receive a plaque for Paul’s dedication to the series and sport.

Qualifying Highlights:
NEOPMA racers entered into this third race with 18 cars ready for the 1320 battle. All power adders were represented well again. Dwayne Wolfe in his Supercharged “Andy McCoy Race Cars” Camaro would take the top honors with a blistering in the heat of the day 5.956 @ 239 followed up in number two spot Tommy Gray and his stellar 5.993 @ 238 in the “Undertaker” supercharged Corvette.

Chuck “Skull Gear Racing” Mohn entered his first NEOPMA race of the series with a powerful 900+ nitrous assisted charge of 6.029 @ 232 in his gorgeous 69′ Camaro. Kevin McCurdy would fall off his as of late typical sub six second passes with his “Tim McAmis” 68 Camaro breaking the beams at 6.038 @ 239. With only one qualifying pass taken, Robert Patrick Jr. in his “Purvis Ford” 903ci nitrous assisted “Super Snake” made a “safe tune” 6.053 @ 243 to also capture TOP MPH. The rest of qualifiers would be as follows: #6 Tyler Hard 6.079 @ 235, #7 Derrick Townes 6.124 @ 236, #8 Steven Assenmacher 6.268 @ 224, #9 Jeff Rodgers 6.400 @ 223, #10 Casey Stemper 6.539 @ 214, #11 Fifi Montrond 6.618 @ 228, #12 Matt Deitsch Jr. 6.783 @ 201, #13 Wayne Patton 6.889 @ 201, #14 Allan Juhasz 6.941 @ 194, #15 Ed Burnley 7.038 @ 198, #16 Frank Patille 7.616 @ 142. Alternates, #17 Craig Pio 8.813 @ 112, #18 Fredy Scriba 9.073 @ 100.

Tyler Hard Camaro

Round One Eliminations:
Dwayne Wolfe would capture his first round win with a stout .053 – 5.938 @ 240 overtaking Frank Patille in his first time out for this season in his gorgeous 57 Buick Roadmaster. Frank lit the boards with a very good .082 – 6.148 @ 214 driving through tire shake. Steven Assenmacher “Juice Junkie” Ford Probe .065 – 6.570 @ 218 who had been battling tire shake all season stuns Jeff Rodgers “Executioner” Mustang .077 – 6.643 @ 209 in his loss. Kevin McCurdy .111 – 6.228 @ 235 takes the win over Wayne Patton’s blown Camaro 6.896 @ 203. Robert Patrick Jr. would put the fans on their feet and a big grin on track manager Jimmy Bradshaw’s face as he blazed the track’s surface in the “Purvis Ford Super Snake” pumping a trail of flaming heat to the tune of a new track record and a win with a .120 – 5.90 @ 247 against Fredy Scriba who would enter in as an alternate after not qualifying pretty much most of this season battling various tire shake problems and though in a loss found his way back with his signature fire in the pipes 6.03 @ 234. Tommy “The Undertaker” Gray would come out on top with a powerful .024 – 5.99 @ 232 over Ed Burnley in Ken Wiley’s 57 Chevy “Ed Burnley is in the process of making changes to his own car, just wait until you see this coming soon”. Derrick Townes would take an easy win .105 – 6.108 @ 238 as Craig Pio launched a little too quickly -.002 – 6.498 @ 167. Chuck Mohn .059 – 6.055 @ 233 snags up his first NEOPMA round win against a very consistent Allan Juhasz .016 – 6.846 @ 203. Tyler Hard would finish the round and Fifi Montrond’s day with .095 – 6.225 @ 233.

Round Two Eliminations:
Kevin McCurdy North East Outlaw Pro ModThe way the ladder paired up it looked like there were going to be some really tough races for fans of certain teams, upsets were definitely in the making to come in this round. Steven Assenmacher would take a HUGE win over Dwayne Wolfe .081 – 9.950 @ 86. A broken driveshaft for Dwayne Wolfe would end his day after a quick torque converter repair in the pits it looks as if the added efficiency of that converter found the next weakest link. Assnemacher’s “Juice Junkie” Probe would move to its first Semi Final .035 – 6.416 @ 208. As soon as the ladder came out everyone knew this was going to be a fight between Kevin McCurdy and Robert Patrick Jr. a repeat of last month’s finals Robert Patrick Jr wanted this badly. Patrick .073 is out first on McCurdy .110 but McCurdy is driving hard to the finish ahead with a winning 6.111 @ 239 as Patrick falls of his earlier pace not able to put all that power down losing with a 6.22 @ 229 making this 2-0 for McCurdy vs. Patrick this season. Tommy Gray’s day looked very positive in the “Undertaker” Vette until the red light bit him -.006 – 6.006 @ 236 Gray does have the power to do some damage this season, so keep an eye out. Derrick Townes takes this win falling off a bit in the heat .072 6.309 @ 195. Chuck Mohn would also be bitten by the dreaded red bulb in his pairing with Tyler Hard. Mohn left early -.005 and backed it off 8.112 @ 119 while Tyler Hard would see a win light from the hit, he also saved his pass slowing on the top end .035 – 6.860 @ 171.

Semi Finals:
With eliminations running smoothly throughout the day, turn around for each elimination session was brisk and on point until Derrick Townes clipped the wall in the Semi’s adding time to clean up a little more than curfew would allow as 11PM was setting in soon. McCurdy had already won his round against the nitrous entry of Steven Assenmacher when Derrick Townes suffered a hair raising crash during his Semi Final elimination round against opponent Tyler Hard. The result would be Tyler Hard’s spectacular nitrous flaming Camaro taking the win 6.00 @ 236 and Derrick Townes making contact with the wall in Hard’s lane right behind him. Both racers were almost dead even from the launch to the 1/8th when Townes (No Time) began moving quickly towards the wall on his side and shooting across the track. Townes quick thinking and years of experiance already deployed the parachutes to try and straighten the car out which kept the impact much less than it could have been at 200+ ending up on the track near the top of the shutdown. Derrick suffered a sprained ankle and his stunning supercharged Camaro had some damage to the headers, side and front. Derrick is in high spirits and intends to return FAST.

With an all “Team Hard Racing Final” set to be run for the second time this year; Both Kevin McCurdy and Tyler Hard faced each other at the NEOPMA Season Opener at MDIR and McCurdy took that win. The rivalry is STRONG between these team-mates and both wanted to put themselves in the beams for this round (smack talk between them is great!!). Though the fans didn’t get to see a final as Tyler Hard was busily trying to repair a freak occurrence with an engine diaper strap finding its way onto a glowing front brake rotor they couldn’t get the hardened mass off in time and damage was done to the rotor as curfew was very near. The fans at Capitol are diehards and both racers felt it would be lackluster to have McCurdy simply break the beams for a win. McCurdy stated “I’m not taking the tree unless I at least have a chance to lay the smack down on Tyler and the games began in the pits all in fun” Team Hard racing is clearly dominating early gaining series points and the loyal respect of their fans who will surely enjoy this final to be run during qualifying at the next NEOPMA Capitol Raceway Event on July 31st – August 1st.

Pro Modified Returns To IHRA In 2015

(01-07-2015) NORWALK, OH – IRG Sports + Entertainment™ (IRG) and the International Hot Rod Association™ (IHRA) are thrilled to announce the return of one of IHRA’s most treasured classes, Pro Modified, to the Nitro Jam Drag Racing series in 2015 with a brand new class sponsor, Crower Racing Products.

Debuting with the IHRA in the early 90s and born out of IHRA’s revolutionary Top Sportsman class, the stars of Pro Modified will return to the IHRA in 2015 led by class sponsor Crower Racing Products. The class will feature quarter-mile competition and an open field at most all Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series events.

Crower Pro ModifiedThis landmark announcement will partner one of IHRA’s original and most exciting classes with an already thrilling lineup of nitro-driven competition in Nitro Funny Car and Nitro Harley, plus US Bounty Hunters Mountain Motor Pro Stock and the world’s only jet dragster championship as the IHRA brings together the best of both worlds in entertainment and competition within the drag racing industry.

“This is a very exciting time for us here at the IHRA as we welcome another fan-favorite class back to the fold in Pro Mod. It is no secret that Pro Mod is one of drag racing’s most popular classes, and with the roots of this class deeply intertwined with the history of the IHRA, we couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this class back to where it all began,” said Scott Gardner, President of IHRA Motorsports. “With Pro Mod and Pro Stock back together, along with our incredible Nitro Funny Car, Nitro Harley and Jet Dragster classes, I would pit the Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series lineup against any racing series in America as far as shear entertainment value. And with a great partner like Crower coming on board to support this class, it should make for one incredible season in 2015.”

With the return of Pro Mod to the Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, the IHRA continues its commitment in returning to its traditional drag racing roots within the professional ranks while also continuing to provide a concise and entertainment-driven event for fans of all ages.

“Pro Mod was born in the IHRA, so to us that is where it belongs. IHRA is bringing the class back to its roots and we are all very excited about that,” said Dina Parise, driver of the 2013 Cadillac CTS-V Pro Mod. “This is a great opportunity for all of us in the Pro Mod community to be back where it all started and to be able to run the full quarter-mile. Eighth-mile racing is nice and they are running some fabulous numbers, but there is nothing like running that back half. Fans will love it and the racers will certainly love being back with the IHRA. We can’t wait to get back on the track and be back with the IHRA.”
